Ronald Lumbao, national chairperson of PMAP (People’s Movement Against Poverty), supposedly led the people who rioted in Mendiola in what is now popularly known as Edsa Tres. On May 1, 2002, thousands of people from the urban poor sector stormed Malacañang to try bringing back ex-President Joseph Estrada to the palace. The violent uprising ended in the death of more than 15 people.

Lumbao was held in prison for 15 months, but was eventually released on bail. He is a former activist closely identified with JV Ejercito, son of deposed president Estrada.

In the 2010 elections. Lumbao supported the presidential candidacy of Joseph Estrada and mayoralty candidacy against Alfredo Lim of former Manila dad Lito Atienza. He continues to head PMAP, one of the biggest organizations fighting poverty.
