Rene Saguisag was one of the human rights lawyers who defended political dissidents during the Marcos era. He became the spokesman of Corazon Aquino in 1986 when she was still a presidential candidate, and then when she became president.

Saguisag was elected senator in 1987 and served until 1992. He was chairman of the Senate committee on ethics and privilege, and the ad hoc committee on the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. Saguisag dropped out of politics and went back to private practice, and to teaching, when his term ended.

When he was still studying, Saguisag worked as a checker, laborer, construction site guard and messenger. He placed sixth in the bar exams, and obtained a master’s degree from Harvard University. For 10 years, Saguisag worked as a student researcher, as associate and eventually became a partner in Ledesma, Guytingco, Velasco and Saguisag.

He is known for defending a wide range of clients, including former president Joseph Estrada. Saguisag resurfaced again in the political limelight when he became the defense lawyer of ex-President Joseph Estrada during the plunder case filed against the latter.
