Lidy Nacpil was a youth activist during the anti-dictatorship movement in the 1980s. Her first husband, Leandro Alejandro, was killed by the military in 1987 under Cory Aquino’s government, leaving her with their young daughter. In 1993, Nacpil began her anti-debt and economic justice work and is now considered one of the leading experts on the subject.

She is currently the International Coordinator of Jubilee South, a network of anti-debt coalitions in more than 60 countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. She also serves as vice-president of the Freedom from Debt Coalition in the Philippines, the oldest organization working for debt cancellation.
