Lt. Col. Gregorio Honasan is said to be the “most compelling symbol” of the Rebolusyonaryong Alyansang Makabayan (Revolutionary Patriotic Alliance-RAM), formerly the Reformed the Armed Forces Movement, which played a prominent role in the 1986 People Power at EDSA. Honasan, together with mentor Juan Ponce Enrile, led the military rebellion together with a group of colonels.

In 1986, he was awarded by President Aquino with a Distinguished Conduct Star for his participation in the 1986 People Power and the Presidential Government Medal. In 1989, however, he led several coup attempts against Mrs. Aquino’s government.

Years later, in 1995, Honasan became the first independent candidate in Philippine history to win a Senate seat. He served two terms until 2004, and was re-elected in 2007.

After President Joseph Estrada was removed from power in 2001, Honasan was said to have been involved in plotting to destabilize Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s administration. Honasan went into hiding as soon as he learned of the order for his arrest. He was also implicated in the Oakwood mutiny.

Honasan now heads the Philippine Guardians Brotherhood, Inc., an organization composed of military and civilian members. He also helps in relief assistance to calamity-hit areas in the country through his Gregorio B. Honasan Peace and Development Foundation, which was founded in 1995.
