General Angelo Reyes was the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Chief of Staff when he led the military in withdrawing support from then President Joseph Estrada, a move which was alleged as the turning point that spelled success for EDSA Dos in January 2001.

He became the Secretary of National Defense under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from 2001 to 2003. From 2004 to 2006, he served as Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government, then as Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources from 2006 to 2007, and Secretary of the Department of Energy from 2007 to 2010.

Reyes was among the top 10 when he graduated from the Philippine Military Academy in 1966. He then proceeded to work on two Masteral degrees: Business Administration from the Asian Institute of Management, and Public Administration from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

In May 2010, Reyes ran as representative of the party-list 1-UTAK, a coalition of members of the transport industry, but due to the disqualification case filed against him, the group withdrew his name as its first nominee to a Congressional seat.
