During the 1986 People Power revolution, Sister Mary John Mananzan and other nuns joined the rally and offered food and shelter to the demonstrators. Armed only with rosaries, flowers and chocolates for the soldiers, they bravely stood at the frontlines facing the tanks of the military.
Born in Pangasinan, Sister Mary John earned a degree in Education at St. Scholastica’s College, a Diploma in Missiology from Wilhemsuniversitaet in Muenster, Germany, a Licentiate in Philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. She has written and edited books, and written articles and essays for local and foreign publications.
She is known as Co-Founder and National Chairperson of Gabriela, the biggest alliance of grassroots women’s organizations in the Philippines. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Institute of Women’s Studies, and Co-Founder and BOT Chairperson of the Women’s Crisis Center.
Sister Mary John was President of St. Scholastica’s College from 1996 to 2002. She currently hosts the program “Nunsense” on cable television.
